Started working on a new Nike campaign today. It involves shooting several of their main British athletes who are based in the Uk and USA. We want to capture the sheer determination and commitment that these athletes have to put into their training and their dedication to their sport. I'll be shooting them as they work out and grabbing them to do portraits of them in a state of exhaustion at the end of their training sessions. It's going to be an amazing shoot to do and really looking forward to it.

I have an article in this month's BBC Lifeforce magazine. It's from two of my early documentary projects and concerns the changes going on in the former Soviet Union at the point of it's breakup. The Ukrainian mining story was my first documentary and I spent three years travelling back to stay with the same family, the Skalar's, in Donetsk. It still remains one of the best projects I did.

The place could dramatically over the next few years and I'd like to document it. It's a bit of a rush job sorting out fixers etc but hopefully all will work out okay.

BBC World Service Interview

Information
Just had the BBC World Service on the phone. They did an interview with me on famine imagery. It all came from a twitter debate between David Campbell and Foto8 a couple of weeks ago. It's a very important debate for all image makers so try and find the time to take a look and add a comment.

Voices for the Alternative

Information
I've currently got a exhibition of portraits from the March for the Alternative march that took place in London a couple of weeks ago. I was asked if I'd like to produce a piece about the march to show at Congress House, the headquarters of the Trades Union Congress in London. I decided to shoot a series of portraits and video interviews with several of the participants and ask them to say in their own words what they thought about the governments current austerity measures. It's a way to show what the vast majority of those there were trying to get across to the government and media. As usual the media focused almost exclusively on the anarchists kicking off at the end of the day, anything to avoid the real issues. (I couldn't resist taking a few shots myself as you can see from my previous blog). The video of the interviews will launched on the falseeconomy.org.uk website soon.

Network talk

Information
Hosted a talk at Abbott Mead Vickers today with a group of photography degree students from Holland and the University of Wales. It's part of an annual Network Week were students come to London for a week to chat to various Photographers and people working in the industry.

As I work in the advertising industry I felt an agency was the best place to hold the talk. We discussed my project and commercial work and then Yudi from Art Buying kindly talked about the workings of an ad agency and then took them on a tour of the building.

For most of the students it was a totally new world which they knew little about so they got allot from the day.

Thanks to Yud, Jaki and Mary in Art Buying for all their help.

Goma

Information
The situation in DRC is really one that is difficult for us to comprehend. The most basic social structures that we take for granted simply don’t exist for the vast majority of people. One statistic which kind of sum’s it up is that in a country the size of Western Europe they only have 1000km of tarmacked road. In a country so ravaged by war, poverty and corruption people get driven to extremes to survive, many of the worst abuses being committed against young girls. It was against this backdrop that I went to DR Congo for War Child to interview some of the victims of this abuse
Several of the girls I interviewed had become quite hardened to the situation they were now in, It’s one way of dealing with the treatment they endured, others were very traumatised still. I’m unable to watch one of the interviews as the girl was so traumatized by what had been done to her and her family. Another heavily pregnant girl was only 13 years old
War Child is they’re working with local NGO’s providing a safe, secure and supportive home and environment for the girls to work through they’re trauma. They provide sensitive counselling and are teaching them skills that will enable them to be independent in the outside world. Many unfortunately are still under threat from those who abused them. Often their families are also threatened and have to move out of the area.
If you’d like to help out the best place to go is War child as the work they are doing is really excellent and they have a great understanding of the needs of the girls who are referred to them.
Whilst I was in Goma I came across a couple of local’s working with some of the street kids. What they were doing was really positive and run on a shoestring. They need to get some new or second-hand equipment to enable them to continue their work. I’ll be posting more about this later as I’d like to ask you to help out if you can.
Thanks
Adam.

War Child video in Congo

Information
Just arrived in Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It was a long trek, London-Nairobi-Kigali and then by road to the Congo. I'll be shooting a film for War Child interviewing young women and girls who suffered abuse at the hands of soldiers during the civil war. We went to the compound today and the mother of the next child they're expecting is a 13 year old girl. This kind of thing really brings you down to earth.

Panel discussion at the London Art Fair

Information
We had a day of discussions on Photography today. I was on the panel for the PhotoVoice debate 'Image Fatigue: Can photographs still be a catalyst for positive social change in a world saturated with images?'. It was standing room only and it seemed we only just got into the debate when the hour was up. Next photographer Rut Blees Luxemburg (who's work I love) discussed 'On The Ephemeral in Photography'. We finished off with a debate about 'Politics in Photography' which is something we need to get more of, the question is how to do it effectively.

Article in British Journal of Photography

Information
My Nikon ad shoot for BMP DDB Needham is featured in the BJP this month. The article discusses how photographers should approach what looks like being a tough year with an interview with my agent John Wyatt-Clarke. The original idea was to shoot it under Westway in London as the budget was very small. The opportunity of shooting an ad of a kid pointing a gun at you is an one not to pass so I took the budget and we went out to Rio de Janerio. I'd recently done some personal work in one of the favela’s there. Once we'd found one relatively safe (I'd had several guns pointed at me at the previous one) we headed out. The end result was much better than under the Westway.
