Egypt Protests

Information
Egypt is embarking on the road to democracy after 3 decades of authoritarian rule under the Mubarak regime. When the new president Morsi gave himself dictatorial powers to rush through a new constitution thousands of people took to the streets and re-occupied Tahrir Square, the center of the 2011 revolution. I decided to jump on the first plane to Cairo to record the protests and the actions of the people to uphold the principles of the first revolution. The strength of feeling and energy of the demonstrators was quite inspirational.

Egypt Murals

Information
Whilst I was in Cairo covering the protests over the proposed new constitution I noticed the way the protesters painted murals to record the events and those killed during the revolution of 2011. It's a facinating use of a very public art form and loads of people came to see them and get themselves photographed against them.

EDL

Information
Back in June i spent one weekend with those delightful men and women of the English Defence League. Working with Dan Jude we met Tommy Robinson and his associates. First thing the next morning on the coach upto a march in Rochdale. The whole town centre was sealed off in a police operation that cost over £1 million for what was the shortest march I've even seen, about 150 meters. Still the crowd managed to start a fight with the police and get 11 people arrested in such a short space of time. Reminded me of the times I covered BNP marches in the 90's. Same old crowd of ex skinheads only 20 years older.

With the build up to the Olympics I've been asked to shoot the poster campaign for mcDonald's. The focus is on the 'Gamesmakers', the volunteers who work behind the scenes preparing the events and also with the public, helping out with enquiries and guiding people on the actual days. It was a long hard slog through mountains of paperwork and restriction but everyone pulled together to pull it all off. Information
Panos Pictures asked me if I would contribute to a book they're working on covering the great cycle tournaments around the world. they were looking for landscapes of the races outside of the race season. I'd been to the Col du Tourmalet stage of the Tour de France over the summer and thought it would make some interesting images. It was late April so I was quite surprised to find the 2115 meter summit still covered in snow. It made for an interesting trek up the mountain in gale force winds, up to my waist in snow drifts at times.

Independent On Sunday

Information
The Shibuya was selected as 'Photography Book of the Week' by the Independent on Sunday. The text accompanying the piece is below:
Shibuya, one of the less explicitly political books by the English photojournalist Adam Hinton, is a series of portraits of commuters using one of the worlds busiest train stations, in Shibuya, Tokyo. Catching them in private or contemplative moments, and somehow isolated from their fellow travellers, it's mood is paradoxically quiet and still, yet it also speaks of their weariness, and of the heavy toll of participating in a market driven economy. Says Hinton: "Little did I know about the terrible events that would befall Japan two months later [earthquake and tsunami], which seems to add another layer to the images."

Shibuya Book Launch

Information
The Shibuya book has finally hit the shelves! The book features images I shot in Tokyo last year. I spent four days hanging around Shibuya station photographing the commuters during the morning and evening rush hour. I really just wanted to take interesting images without focusing on some of the issues I usually focus on but according to people who viewed the work it was very much a statement on peoples working lives.
The Creative Director Paul Belford really liked the work and asked if i like to publish the images his agencies first book. I of course couldn't say no and was honoured to be asked.
