Information
On 24th August 1991 Ukraine declared itself an independent state and left the USSR, Four months later on Christmas day 1991 the Soviet Union collapsed. I'd studied Soviet politics at college and was very keen to see the changes happening first hand. Ukraine had been referred to as the bread basket of the SU and it was also its industrial heartland, though that was now referred to as a rustbelt. In November 1991 I contacted the independence movement and told them I'd like to visit the industrial city of Donetsk and stay with a mining family. Two weeks later i was on the plane to Kyiv. The project started as one about the coal mines but soon became focused on the Slakar family I was staying with. I visited them several times over the next three years. These are the images I recorded.
